It’s that time of the year again where you need to buy gifts for all of your family and friends — and a few things for yourself (because why not?). Whether you’re shopping for a loved one or for yourself, make sure you add a select few essential oils to your shopping list. These oils will help you repel insects and other pests from coming near your home.

1. Peppermint

The most festive (and one of the most effective) things on your holiday shopping list should be peppermint essential oils. This will make your home smell like it’s ready for the holidays, while also repelling pests such as ants, fleas, spiders, mice, and houseflies. To deter pests from coming near a specific area of your home (or where you’ve seen them most in the past), place a few drops of this peppermint oil on a cotton ball and place it strategically in high-traffic areas.

2. Eucalyptus

Not only is eucalyptus oil used for medicinal purposes, it can also be used as an insecticide. It can kill pests like mites, aphids, and earwigs upon contact with the oil. Place a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil in a spray bottle along with a half-teaspoon of dish soap and two cups of water. Shake this solution well and begin spraying those pests until they’re all belly up!

3. Tea Tree Oil

Like eucalyptus, tea tree oil is used for many medicinal purposes (like treating infections). While tea tree oil is used to prevent viral and bacterial infections, it’s also used for killing parasitic pests such as fleas, lice, and ticks. You can also keep mice away by placing some on cotton balls spread throughout the house, and you can kill bed bugs by spraying a solution of tea tree oil and water onto furnishings and linens.
