This is our second pest battle here at Pest Control Unlimited, and with termites taking the last fight, we are excited to hear who you think will take this one. A wasp is certainly the more physically intimidating species, but a bee can use its brain as a weapon. Do you think that gives the bee an edge? Let’s learn more about bees and wasps»
Bees

  • Aggressiveness- Bees are less aggressive than wasps by nature. Some bee species can survive a sting, but honey bees will die on their first sting.
  • Identification- They tend to be longer and wider than wasps. They have dangling legs and are often brightly colored.
  • Social- Bees are VERY social insects. They have a definite social structure which makes them more impactful in groups than on their own. Recent studies show that bees have the ability to problem solve.
  • Close Relatives- Ants, wasps, hornets.

Wasps

  • Aggressiveness- More aggressive in nature because they have the ability to sting multiple targets. Wasps have been known to attack without being provoked but it is more likely that another instigator started the battle.
  • Identification- They are just as long as bees, but they tend to have a skinnier torso. They have two sets of wings and they are often brightly colored.
  • Social- Wasps tend to be slightly less social than bees but they typically aren’t found alone. They’re hunters, and some hunters like to hunt alone but it isn’t common. There are over 100,000 species of wasp which makes them a little more confusing to study.
  • Meaning- Every insect species has a ‘wasp’ species that cannibalizes its population. They prey on bees and other insects like bees making them a parasite in a way.

Now that Summer is approaching, pests like wasps and bees are going to be popping up in your backyard more frequently. They are native to the Massachusetts area and May is when they begin to mate. Don’t let your yard play host to their summer parties.
