The most common way to find out that bugs have arrived is by the itchy, red, bumpy bites they leave behind. If you’ve noticed an unexplained, irritated mark or two, here’s a quick guide to help you identify the culprit and prevent its return.

Mosquito bites are often seen in the warmer, humid months and appear as itchy, round, red or pink bumps on the skin. While these are generally harmless, sometimes mosquitoes can transmit illnesses like Malaria and the West Nile and Zika viruses which can have serious consequences.

Bed bug bites are usually not felt by the victim, but are seen in rows of tiny red marks on the skin that can sometimes become irritated and inflamed. The most common places that bed bugs like to go after are on the neck, face, arms and hands – however, they’re willing to bite almost anywhere.

House Spider bites can be very painful, red and itchy, but are usually not poisonous or harmful to your health. In rare cases, an allergic reaction can occur which causes anaphylaxis. Unlike mosquitoes and bed bugs, spiders bite out of fear and not to feed., which makes them less likely to occur.

Brown Recluse Spider bites are more serious than standard house spider bites because brown recluses are poisonous. Their bites appear as small, bruises or blisters that turn dark and crusty with time. In addition, victims of this spider will experience fever, chills, itching, nausea and sweating, and in severe cases they may ensure kidney failure, seizure or coma.

Tick bites appear in a circular, bulls eye shape with redness radiating outward in rings. If the tick is still lodged in the skin you might notice a small scab-looking bump in the center of the bite. Remember, ticks can carry a wide variety of diseases, including Lyme disease, so be sure to visit your physician as soon as a tick bite is detected.
