Mosquitoes are certainly disruptive and dangerous if they are carrying a disease your body can’t fight. But over the years, people have begun forming myths around mosquitoes that are just flat out not true. Here are some common examples»

Myth 1: All Mosquitoes Bite
According to the Center for Disease Control, there are over 3,500 different species of mosquitoes in the world. Some will only eat plants, others prefer reptiles to mammals, and some actually like birds over land animals. But did you know that only female mosquitoes will take blood from you? It helps during egg production.

Myth 2: Mosquitoes Like Specific Blood Types
Most people believe that having sugar or alcoholic beverages will actually attract mosquitoes to you. It will bring them to the area, but it won’t make you any more likely to get bitten. In fact, mosquitoes really don’t care what you have eaten or drank that day. They just want your blood!

Myth 3: Mosquito Bites are More Common for Pregnant Women
Now this is not actually a COMPLETE myth. Pregnant women tend to breathe heavier than non-pregnant women, and mosquitoes are actually attracted to all that carbon dioxide they are giving off. The reason it’s on the myth list is because mosquitoes are just as likely to bite someone who just finished exercising.

Myth 4: Citronella Will Save You
Citronella candles are certainly effective– if you have enough of them. One OFF citronella candle is not going to do the job against a midsummer swarm of mosquitoes. If the wind is blowing one way, the mosquitoes will simply access your table from the opposite direction. It’s not a very full-proof repellent.

Myth 5: Mosquito Diseases Don’t Come to the U.S
While most mosquito-borne diseases don’t form in the U.S, there are plenty of vectors that can bring them here. Whether it be luggage on an airplane or a bite from a foreign visitor, we are certainly not as safe as we think we are. That is why protecting your property is so vital!
