You probably know all about bed bugs and how they bite — after all, you’d be hard pressed to find someone that has never heard the famous bedtime rhyme. But did you know that besides their distinctive repercussions, there are actually a few more way to tell that bed bugs have taken up residence in your home? Here are some of the telltale signs that are easiest to recognize from the get-go.

Small Dark Spots – If you start to notice tiny dark specks on your bed and its sheets, you may want to take a closer look. Bedbugs excrete a dark substance, which can sometimes bleed on fabric, just like a marker would.

Unexplained Stains – The presence of rusty, or red-colored stains on your mattress or bed sheets can often signal a bed bug infestation. As gross as it may sound, these stains are actually a result of bed bugs being squished and squashed in your bed — ick!

Eggshells & Live Bugs – Of course, if you see either eggshells or live bed bugs milling about on your mattress, there are no questions that you’ve got an infestation. Unfortunately, shells and bugs can be difficult to detect since they’re so tiny, so you’ll have to inspect carefully.

When they’re not looking to feed, bed bugs can hide out in a variety of places, including:

  • Between the seam and cushions of upholstered furniture
  • In the folds of heavy curtains
  • Within drawer joints and inside the head of a screw
  • Behind electrical outlet plates
  • Underneath loose wallpaper or behind hangings

Now that you know where to look and what to look for specifically, you’ve got a better chance of catching a bed bug infestation before it gets out of hand. Remember, bed bugs can reproduce rapidly, so it’s imperative that you give your local pest control professional a call at the first inkling of an infestation.
