The sun is shining and the bugs are buzzing! With warm weather comes those pesky summer critters. No one wants to worry about dealing with a pest infestation while trying to enjoy some fun in the sun. With help from the New England Pest Management Association, we’ve compiled a list of some of the most common summer nuisances and tips to help avoid them:

Ants: As one of the most common pests for New Englanders, ants can be found in homes, restaurants, offices, and any other location where a food and a source of water is present. They become a particular inconvenience when they find their way into your kitchen cabinets and pantries. Not only will ants contaminate your food, but they can also cause irreversible structural damage to your home if they burrow through and nest within decaying wooden beams. Watch your counters for these creepy crawlers and be sure to wipe tabletops down regularly with a disinfectant of your choice.

Indian Meal Moths: These creepy critters are among the most exasperating in that they are notorious for nesting and reproducing within pantries nationwide. Indian Meal Moths commonly contaminate cereal and whole grain products, dried fruits, and pet foods by spinning spider-like webs that they use to feed and crawl about within your cabinets. Starting to panic? Keep an eye out for small moths flying in and around areas where you store non-perishables and be sure to seal any potential entry points, including those for utilities and pipes.

Ticks and Fleas: Ticks in the area are known for carrying Lyme disease, which can cause flu-like symptoms in humans and their four-legged companions. Similar to ticks, fleas can be a real drag for you and pets. Flea bites are itchy and uncomfortable, and can transmit a plethora of bacterial diseases. Keep a close watch when hiking on a sunny Saturday or walking your dog through heavily wooded areas. It’s good practice to wear long pants or high socks, and make sure to lay on the bug spray! Don’t forget to mow your lawn regularly and vacuum your home often to prevent the spread of fleas.
