When you really think about the holidays, there are a few different types of plants that are brought into the house. While they might be beautiful (and make you smile each time you look their way), these plants can attract unwanted pests. Before bringing these plants into your home, make sure you know how you can keep them from staying with you for the holidays — and beyond!

Christmas Trees

Are you the type of person that needs to have a freshly cut down tree in their living room each and every year? If so, make sure the one you choose isn’t filled with pests! Fresh trees are known to carry spiders, ticks, mites, aphids, and a few other insects — especially if the tree was bought from a tree farm (these places harbor insects). Before bringing your new tree into your home, give it a good shake and then a thorough inspection.

Wreaths

Similar to the trees above, wreaths can be created using similar plants, thus having similar insects harboring within. In addition to the plant itself, flowers, leaves, and pomegranates that are used for decorations on wreaths can attract even more pests. Spiders, beetles, aphids, along with any insect eggs will usually nest in these pieces of door decor.

Poinsettias

When purchasing real poinsettias, be aware that these plants are usually grown in warmer climates or greenhouses. Therefore, due to the warm and humid environments they’re grown in, they can become filled with fungus gnats. Spiders and mealy bugs can also find their way into these plants. Remember to never over water these plants, as you don’t want the soil to ever be too moist to prevent any fungus from growing.

Plants are used more often than you think during the holiday season in a variety of different ways. When you bring these plants into your home, make sure you take the proper precautions or consider professional pest management if you discover an infestation.
