Pumpkins and pumpkin carving have entrenched themselves in Halloween culture just about as much as anything else. Homes are lined with the fruit, and this welcomes in the neighborhood pests in for a free meal. Well, let’s stop this madness! You can still enjoy carving time with the family, but there are some ways to make sure your artwork is not eaten by a squirrel or other rodent. Just keeping reading to find out how!

  • Solution #1- This might seem a little crazy, but spraying hot sauce on your pumpkins is a simple and easy way to keep rodents away. Start by taking a cheap bottle of hot sauce and emptying half of it into a spray bottle. Then, dilute it with water and a few teaspoons of liquid soap. After you’ve done that, spray this solution on your carved or uncarved pumpkins and watch the squirrels quiver in fear.
  • Solution #2- The next solution is a lot more practical. If you’ve read our blog before, we have mentioned that peppermint oil is a great thing to keep around for DIY pest control. The same applies here. Take that same peppermint oil you used to repel spiders and ants and coat your pumpkins with it. They’ll smell delicious and rodents won’t want any part of them.
  • Solution #3- Do you have a dog that sheds? If so, solution number three will give you a reason to hold on to all that extra hair. Take some of it in your hand and sprinkle it on the ground where you are going to lay your pumpkins. If the squirrels smell the hair, they won’t go anywhere near the area.

There is no reason you shouldn’t have your cake and eat it too. Some people have stopped putting out pumpkins because they know they’ll just be destroyed. Hopefully with these solutions, families can feel comfortable putting out their carvings for all of us to see!
