Keeping a home safe from pests is a difficult and dangerous job. While we typically don’t recommend DIY pest control, we understand that there are certain situations where it might be applicable. In those situations, it’s important that homeowners handle the situation carefully, and avoid these common pest control mishaps.

  1. Not taking proper precautions. Pesticides, baits and repellents are all harmful to pests, but they can also be dangerous to people and pets as well. Handle pest control chemicals carefully, and apply them in safe places. If you have to treat an area where contact is possible, keep children and pets out of that space until it’s safe.
  2. Failing to address the cause. Treating a pest infestation starts by first identifying the cause. Sure, spraying might eliminate your infestation, but it won’t prevent them from coming back again!
  3. Not cleaning thoroughly. The first line of defense against a pest infestation is a clean, uncluttered home. No matter how many times you treat a pest problem, it will continue to return if you’re not diligent enough about indoor and outdoor home maintenance.
  4. Baiting traps improperly. When choosing where to set your traps, make sure you think like the pest. Set bait in places where pests might go, like in dark corners or behind cabinets and appliances.
  5. Not knowing your enemy. The first step to treating a pest problem is familiarizing yourself with the insect or rodent that’s plaguing your home. Researching the pest first will help you come to conclusions about how to treat the infestation effectively.
