Though they may look cute and cuddly, according to the CDC, “rats and mice spread over 35 diseases” worldwide. As the weather cools down, these tiny rodents are anxious to find shelter in the first warm, dry space they come across, which could very well be your home. To keep your family protected from illness and your home protected from damage, here are a few of the most common red flags to keep an eye out for when identifying a mice infestation.

Visible Mice: Whether dead or alive, if you spot one mouse, there are likely to be hundreds more taking up residence in and around your home. Mice are typically about 2-3 ¼ inches in length with a long, hairless tail to match. They are small with black eyes, weighing less than an ounce and generally light brown or gray in color.

Nests: Mice will make nests in warm, dark corners of your home. Be on the lookout for nesting or piled up nesting materials. Remember that mice are known to nest within the walls, so just because you don’t see a nest doesn’t mean there isn’t one.

Tiny Nibbles: If you notice gnawed holes in your pantry foods, insulation or piled papers, the likelihood that a mouse is behind it is very high. Typically they’ll use insulation and paper for nesting materials, and pantry food for nourishment. Also, be aware that food scraps or unexplainable food wrappings can also indicate that mice are near.

Mouse Droppings: When in doubt, the best way to identify a mice problem is by finding their droppings around the home. Mice droppings are tiny pellets, only about ¼ of an inch long with pointed ends.

Scampering: Though you may not visibly see signs of a mice infestation, you may be able to hear them. Listen up for tiny feet scampering across the floor and within your home’s walls. Since mice are nocturnal, you’ll be more likely to hear them during the night time.
