Having a termite infestation in your home is the worst type of infestation you can have in terms of potential damage — that’s a fact! “How to get rid of termites,” is one of the last questions that a homeowner wants to ask. That’s why all homeowners (and business owners) take a sigh of relief when the winter arrives. They believe termites hibernate like the rest of the spring and summer insects.

But is this true? Well, about that…

Do Termites Hibernate During Winter?

The answer is yes — and no. (As you can see, the answer isn’t that simple.)

When the weather turns cold, termites will bury themselves underneath the soil or the wood they’re currently inhabiting (further than usual) in an attempt keep warm. Since termites are cold-blooded and unable to produce body heat, they will be unable to move when the temperatures reach below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

Termites closer to the surface of the soil will most likely be motionless, appearing to be dead. However, termites in unheated areas of the home can be discovered in clusters for warmth purposes. So think of it as an involuntary hibernation.

Can Termites Still Feed During Winter?

Even though termites can’t even move when the temperatures are under 50 degrees, that doesn’t mean all of them won’t be feeding.

Any home that had a pre-existing termite infestation, can continue to experience further damage this winter. Not in the attic, basement, crawl space, or behind the walls, but certainly where there’s heat. So as long as termites are warm, they can continue to chew away at stairs, banisters, floors, furniture, etc. If you think you might have an infestation, it’s important to get a termite inspection as soon as possible to avoid any extra damage.

Yes, your chances of developing a termite infestation are extremely unlikely. However, those who currently have an infestation (known or unknown) can still experience further damage to their home.
