The bathroom is a sanctuary for moms and dads all across the United States. It is one of the only places you can be truly alone– but what if you weren’t? What if there was a spider or roach hiding underneath your sink waiting for you to finish your business? Well, if you don’t follow these tips, this might happen to you!

Seal Pipe Penetrations
If you’ve recently had plumbing or HVAC repairs done on your home, you need to inspect the exterior openings that were created. If they aren’t sealed properly, this gives smaller outdoor pests like roaches and spiders the access to your home that they desire. Even something as small as cable installation could leave gaps, so you should perform the same maintenance after these repairs as well. For small holes, use caulk and for larger ones, foam or insulation should do the trick.

Spice It Up
Pests tend to hate the smell of lemon or peppermint essential oils, but they are actually quite pleasant for the human nostrils. You should purchase an essential oil diffuser (confusing, we know) to spice up your bathroom scent and help fend off the pests!

Inspect Screens
If you’re someone who opens up the window while you shower, this is especially important. Any kind of mouse or clawed pest can easily break through a window screen if they’re given enough time. To combat this, routinely check you screens and fortify your defenses if it is necessary.

Repair Leaks Immediately
If you notice water pooling up underneath your vanity, this is not something you should glance over. It could be a loose fitting, pipe break or a different kind of plumbing issue but it needs to be repaired immediately. Pests are attracted to standing water and if you don’t do something now, they might use your bathroom as their new watering hole!
