A bed bug infestation is a serious matter that requires immediate attention as soon as it has been detected by a residential or commercial property owner. As we discussed in a recent blog, bed bugs are extremely resilient, which is why special precautions must be taken before, during and after a building has been treated for bed bugs. If you’re planning to have a professional come and treat an infestation in your home soon, here’s all you need to know to be prepared.

  1. Plan to vacate. Be prepared with a plan to relocate yourself and your family while the treatment is underway. It is recommended that you plan to be displaced from your home for at least four hours, but we would encourage you give it a full twenty-four to be safe.
  2. Take your pets. Don’t leave your scaly, furry or fishy friends behind! If you have a large, immobile fish tank, wrap it in plastic wrap and switch the pump off while you’re gone.
  3. Clean the area. Before treatment, strip the bed completely and wash everything on the hottest water setting possible. Then, dispose of any infested or ripped mattresses or furniture by placing them in large storage bags.
  4. Gut your home. Remove all of your personal items, and empty every single closet. The idea is to have a clean slave for the professionals to come in and clean efficiently.
  5. Wash all clothing. After everything is removed from the closets you’ll want to wash all clothing and cloth based items on high heat, as you did with your bedding. Then, store them in storage bags for at least two weeks after your home has been treated.
  6. Vacuum and rearrange. Move each piece of furniture away from the wall to allow access to baseboards. Then, carefully vacuum everything, taking special care to discard the vacuum bag properly once you have finished.
