Often times indoor pest problems begin as outdoor pest problems, which is why it’s so important to know what might be lurking in your greenery. To get you started, here are some of the most common pest sightings you may find in your yard.

  • Aphids are most commonly found clinging to  the undersides of plant leaves and stems. They’re very tiny, soft, and can be brown, black, gray, or green. One of the most common indications that aphids have infested your yard is the gooey mess they leave behind. No only can aphids destroy your plants, but they attract other insects as well.
  • Root Weevils attack both the leaves and the roots of your plants, depending on where in their life cycle they are. White larvae are fond of roots, while matte black adults prefer to much on leaves in late spring, early summer. Their telltale sign are small, squared-off notches in your plants’ leaves.
  • Earwigs are one of the more creepy, crawly critters that you’ll come into contact with in the yard. Sporting a set of intimidating front pincers, earwig bodies are, dark in color and long with six legs attached to their torso. While they’re most commonly found chewing brown holes through leaves, they’re also drawn to damp, dark places, which makes basements a common nesting place.
  • Ants are more of a nuisance than anything — as long as they’re not carpenter ants. While most ants will just serve to increase the aphid population, larger ant species can actually do damage to your home. Carpenter ants specifically are known for their ability to tunnel through wood, similar to the way termites behave.
