If you live in a heavily wooded area, or frequent hiking trails and brush-filled parks, ticks are definitely one of the most important pests on your radar. These tiny vampires feed on blood and can carry a variety of dangerous diseases. While we recommend spraying your yard each year to minimize your tick population, here are a few more ways that you can be proactive in controlling these pests the natural way.

  • Wash them away. If you, your children, or even your pet has been out frolicking around in an area where ticks have been known to hide, it’s important to take a shower or bath right away. Bathing within the first two hours after exposure can help get rid of any stowaways that have not yet burrowed.
  • Inspect thoroughly. The sooner you check for hitchhiking ticks, the better. It is suggested that you perform a thorough, whole-body tick check within 36 hours of coming into contact, but we say check right away. As soon as you come in, examine you clothes and body before jumping in the shower.
  • Prepare your yard. Installing a sturdy fence is one way to keep tick-carrying animals out of your yard. You should also keep your grass mowed short, as ticks love to hide in tall grasses. Firewood piles should be kept neat and situated far from your home, and adding a gravel barrier around your yard can help keep mice and small tick-carrying critters out.

As we mentioned earlier, while natural remedies and prevention methods can be helpful, the best way to control a backyard tick problem is with a professional pest control application. Luckily, ours also happens to be organic!
