Unlike mice, squirrels aren’t necessarily a rodent that people worry about in their homes. We see them all over the place, but we never really see them as a threat. What you might not know is, squirrels actually can be a problem in attics and other high access points that they can reach from trees. They can chew through electrical wire, wood and just about anything they can get their hands on, so it is best to be weary. Keep these tips in mind the next time you see an abundance of squirrels hanging around outside your home.

Plant Deterrents
Your garden is the first place you should turn your attention when it comes to fending off squirrels. They eat acorns, seeds, plants and a whole mess of other organic matter that lies in the garden in front of your home. To make sure they don’t become a problem, plant some lilies, marigolds and other scented plants that squirrels are known not to enjoy.

Use Your Dog’s Hair
All that extra fur that your dog loses daily finally has a use. Get the hair in a bundle and take it out to the yard for some all-natural pest control. Spread it around the garden and make sure at least some of it remains exposed on top of the soil. The scent will make the much smaller squirrels think that your dog is lurking nearby.

Eliminate Bridges
Squirrels tend to try and cozy up in the winter time and unfortunately one of their favorite spots is your attic. But lucky for you, it is really quite simple to keep them away. They can’t scale your siding as most of them tend to climb trees and find their way on to roofs via the branches. With this in mind, all you have to do is trim those branches and make sure no squirrels can gain access to your roof.

Spice It Up
Squirrels hate the smell of cayenne pepper, hot sauce and vinegar. Take whichever option you tolerate the best and lightly coat plants, flower pots and anything else in front of your home that might serve as a squirrel hot spot.
