Most of the animal kingdom prefers warm temperatures to cold ones. With this in mind, you should not be surprised to hear that pests tend to pop up more frequently indoors this time of year. Whether it is spiders, mice, squirrels or other critters, you want to make sure that there is a divide between what is yours and what is theirs. They can have the woods out back, but you need to keep your house all to yourself. Here are some tips to execute that plan:

Spiders
The key to eliminating spiders is taking away their food source. Most pesticides aren’t going to work because with their long legs, spiders can crawl over the poisoned areas. But what the pesticides will do is slowly eliminate other bug species to take away their food source. The less they have to munch on, the more likely it is that they will look elsewhere for shelter.

Rodents
Just like humans, rodents will look to make it indoors for the colder months. But that is your home and they can’t have it! To help lock down the fort, make sure all windows, screens, chimneys and other access points are sealed and locked down. But don’t forget to routinely check these areas. With their claws and teeth, a rodent can easily break through a screen.

Raccoons
Raccoons and squirrels are often referred to as ‘attic pests’ because that is where they seek winter shelter. Heat rises, so what better place to spend the winter than a nice, cozy attic. The first step to locking down your home is to cut off their ‘bridges’ to your roof. Make sure all tree branches are trimmed so they can’t use them to access your roof.

Termites
This is the time of year where firewood starts to pile up. Make sure you keep it at least 25 feet from your home so that termites remain a safe distance away. Before you bring in any logs to throw on the fire, examine the wood and make sure there are no holes with termites inside of them.
