Pest control is a seasonal business that changes with the reading on the thermometer. In the summer we focus on ticks, bees and mosquitoes and in the winter we set our sights on rodents, spiders and other insects. In Massachusetts, we tend to have mild summers, harsh winters and more temperate fall and spring seasons. This leaves the following pests scrambling for shelter when November starts to really set in.

Moths
In many parts of the world and especially in North America, moths are considered an invasive species. They chew on the trees in our forests and sometimes, they damage them beyond repair. Scientists hope that a drop in temperature could help keep our forests safe because these pests’ larvae can’t withstand the colder temperatures.

Stinkbugs
The stinkbug is a commonly seen pest in homes throughout Massachusetts. They have a very low resistance to colder weather, so they will do anything they can to get inside your home and survive. Their most active times of year are the fall when they’re trying to get in, and the spring when they’re trying to get out. If you can seal up your home with the help of a pest control professional, these guys don’t stand a chance.

Ticks
In years with harsh winters, the number of ticks and the diseases that come with them drop significantly. They have no natural defense to colder weather and if they can’t find a host, they’re likely to die off quickly.

Beetles
Beetle’s are more prominent in the south because of the warmer climate. But with mild fall seasons becoming more common in the north, this species of insect has been making the migration. Scientists believe their stay in our neck of the woods will be short lived, but it is something to keep an eye on.
