Thanksgiving brings the family to town and that means crazy conversations, wine, food and all of your favorite people in one place. This should be a happy time, but for some homes in America, this means an influx of unwanted guests. No, we’re not talking about the in-laws, we’re talking about the critters, insects and other pests that are looking to feast on your leftovers. To avoid post- Thanksgiving disaster, follow these tips and enjoy a pest-free road through the holiday season.

Encourage a Team Effort
There are plenty of people enjoying the food, so why not have some of them help clean it up? Bring some of your favorite family members into the kitchen, have a few drinks and clean up the aftermath of dinner before the pests arrive. The longer you let it linger, the greater chance you have of attracting insects and other pests.

Set Up a Soaking Station
This is very important for the protection of your pottery and your pest-free environment. Take a small garbage can and fill it halfway with warm, soapy water. Once you have done this, place your cooking pots and pans into the water and let them soak while you enjoy dessert. This will keep the sink clear of obstructions and it will allow you to clean up the dishes as you go along. The same theory holds true; the quicker you clean, the less time there is for pests to detect and eat away at you crumbs.

Reinforce Your Garbage
A feast that big is going to lead to garbage build up that you may not be prepared for. But don’t just assume you can tie up garbage in a bag and leave it next to your already filled cans. This will invite mice, squirrels and raccoons to an easy meal and they might come inside looking for more where that came from. To avoid this, keep excess garbage in the garage or shed until it is time for pick up.

Clean As You Go
The most important theme here is to keep things clean and that shouldn’t be difficult if you do a little at a time. Once the appetizers are finished, wrap them up and clean before serving dinner. Then, do the same thing in between dinner and dessert. If you do it this way, you won’t be left with a mound of dishes and leftovers to clean at the end of the night.
