As humans, we are spoiled with lifespans that sometimes hit the century mark. But what if we had to pack all of life’s adventures into a month, or a week or even a day? This might seem unthinkable, but that is the reality for some other species in the animal kingdom.

Let’s take a look at some of the shortest-living animals on the planet:

House Mice (1 year)
While one year might seem like a pretty short life, these guys are actually the longest living species on our list. In just one year, mice have to mature and reproduce before they kick the bucket. These little guys are great scavengers and their lifestyle takes them on all kinds of expeditions throughout their 365 days on earth.

Dragonfly (4 months)
These insects might look intimidating but they are really anything but. They are easy prey for spiders, birds, lizards and frogs because they can’t fly unless they are in optimal conditions. Many of them will not even reach their maximum lifespan of four months.

Houseflies (4 weeks)
These naggy little insects are always popping up in homes across America. You’re trying to eat a nice meal and all of a sudden you hear that little “bzzz,” and you know they are lurking. Lucky for you, that fly that keeps bothering you will only be around for a few weeks. But the bad news is, female house flies can lay up to 1000 eggs in as little as two weeks.

Drone Ants (3 weeks)
This is a fancy word for the male ants in a colony. They don’t have a lot of work responsibility, but they do play a vital role in the success of the group. In just three weeks, they have to grow and reproduce to ensure a future for their colony.

Mayflies (24 hours)
Yes, you did read that correctly. The mayfly only lives for one day, but what a day it is. They like to dance with other members of their families and then complete their life with reproduction. Quick, simple and to the point.
