If you thought your job had a strict chain of command, wait till you see what a beehive’s hierarchy looks like. For such a small insect, bees have to do a lot of work, and that requires every member of the hive to play his/her part. Let’s take a look at that system and see just how regimented it really is.

The Queen Bee
The queen is at the top as you might expect. And her role is to provide the hive with the next generation of workers. Her duties don’t stray far away from reproduction as she only has to leave the hive once in her life to mate. The daily life of a queen in bee country consists of laying around 1,500 eggs and being waited on hand and foot by her drones. Yes, we said 1,500! The queen establishes structure in the hive and without her the other bees would start slacking off on their daily duties.

The Male Drones
The male drones top priority is to mate with the queen and usher in the next generation of bees. But their lives are not all they are cracked up to be. They are incapable of foraging for food and they lack stingers to protect themselves. Most even die after mating so they can’t even see the young that they have produced. What a life!

The Female Workers
There are about 100 female worker bees for every 1 male drone. This leaves an imbalance in the hive and as is the case in the human world, the woman are left with all the work! The role of the female workers vary depending on what the queen has assigned them. Some become scouts, bodyguards or foragers and others are responsible for producing honey. Without her foot soldiers, the queen would be nothing.
