The 4th of July is next weekend, and we can’t wait! If you’re planning a big barbecue, like most proud and patriotic Americans we know, you better have plans in place to keep the mosquitoes at bay. Mosquitoes are among the most bothersome summer pests around, so don’t let them ruin your 4th of July fun and leave your guests with agonizing, itchy bug bites.

Here are three simple non-toxic tips to help keep the mosquitoes away next weekend:

1. Don’t extend the invitation! Check your property for still or stagnant water, as this acts as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Check flowerpots and gutters for trapped water from recent rainfall and drain whatever you find right away. As we mentioned in a previous post, there are also a ton of mosquito repellent plants that you can add to your garden.

2. Increase air circulation. Keeping a constant airflow will make it more difficult for mosquitoes to get close enough to land on your unsuspecting guests. If you have an enclosed porch, or an overhang, install a ceiling fan. Don’t have a place for a fixed fan? Try grabbing a standing one and setting it up to oscillate, blowing cool air on your guests and keeping them bug-free – We’re sure they won’t complain!

3. Keep your skin protected. Wearing long sleeves and pants is a good way to deter mosquitoes from biting, but we know that’s not always an option on a hot summer night. If you’re too warm to layer-up, try lathering up with a homemade bug spray.

Follow these quick tips to deter mosquitoes and make the most of your 4th of July celebration!
