The biggest attraction for mosquitoes is you! But not your blood as you would think — actually, it’s your breath. When we breathe we release carbon dioxide, a natural gas that mosquitoes use to detect their next victims. Unfortunately, there’s not much we can do to keep our breathing to a minimum, but there do happen to be a few ways we can make it less likely for mosquitoes to show up to the party in the first place.

Keep scents contained. The stickier and sweeter, the better in a mosquito’s opinion. Sugary scents are like an open invitation for insects, so try to keep you fruity drinks and desserts covered or indoors at all times. The same goes for your mouth-watering barbecue buffet!

Stay in the shade. Research shows that the more you sweat, the more likely you are to become a meal for a mosquito. This may have something to do with the correlation between sweating and breathing more heavily.

Dress to protect. We know you want to soak up all the sun, but make sure you bring an extra layer to throw on when the bugs start to bite! Besides protecting you from mosquitoes, having a light jacket or pair of sweats can also warm you up as things get chilly when the sun goes down.

Put down the beer. Don’t shoot the messenger! While we encouraged responsibly adult fun this weekend, studies also show the more alcohol you consume, the tastier you become to mosquitoes. Just something to think about!
