Did you know that what you take a bite out of can actually impact what tries to take a bite out of you? That’s right, there are certain foods that when consumed or used appropriately, can actually stop mosquitoes in their tracks.

Garlic – What horror movies say is true — garlic can really keep the bloodsuckers at bay! However, instead of simply wearing a garland around your neck, you must actually eat a clove or two a day for it to work. As your body breaks down the garlic over time your pores will sweat it out, repelling mosquitoes in the process.

Olive Oil – Your favorite birdbath or decorative pond might look lovely in your yard, but they’re also presenting the perfect breeding grounds for mosquitoes. But don’t get rid of them just yet! Floating a few tablespoons of olive oil on the water’s surface can create a barrier between mosquitoes and the standing water.

Apple Cider Vinegar – If you know you’re going to be camping, hiking, or just spending a long day in the outdoors, apple cider vinegar is your first line of defense. About three days before your outdoor adventure, begin taking a tablespoon three times a day, and then continue to do so on your journey. The vinegar repels mosquitoes, and even gnats too!

Citrus Fruits – If you’re not a fan of garlic, and you’d rather not down apple cider vinegar,, grab some orange or lemon rinds. Rubbing the peels on your arms and legs can help keep mosquitoes away. A slice of onion will do the trick as well, but we prefer the sweet scent of citrus instead!
