We throw our trash away to get it out of sight and out of our sense of smell. Unfortunately, when raccoons go looking for a midnight snack, our garbage is often their meal of choice. This leaves you with garbage all over your lawn and a lot of unnecessary cleaning. To avoid all the hassle, use these tips to help keep your garbage safe from pests.

Step 1: Buy a new can
The plastic garbage can is the most common, but it is not always the best for pest prevention. Some low end plastic cans can be easily chewed through by raccoons and other pests and this will give them easy access to your garbage goodies. If you are going to stick with plastic, make sure you buy or build a cage for your cans if you live in a wooded area.

Step 2: Secure the lid
Some people get crazy with it and buy a chain to lock the lid down, but who wants all that work? Raccoons and squirrels are not a smart species and they aren’t capable of removing a simple bungee cord. Just strap it to one side, run it underneath the lid handle and then secure it to the other side. Your lid should now be pest-proof and if it’s not, these little guys are evolving.

Step 3: Spray your can
Raccoons and other critters hate the smell of ammonia which should be an asset for you. Underneath your trash bags, place a few towels soaked in ammonia to deter the creepy crawlers.

Step 4: Install Motion Detecting Lights
Raccoons are creatures of the night and for that reason they are spooked by the sign of lights. If you install a few 100 watt motion detecting lights around your cans, this should be enough for them to move on to the next house.
