Bug spray sales have skyrocketed recently due to the impending threat of the Zika virus. While there is no cure for the virus yet, wearing protective clothing and using insect repellent can help keep you and your family protected from the mosquito-transmitted disease. If bug spray is your first line of defense, you want to make sure you are using the good stuff. Take a look at the most effective repellents on the market:

OFF Deep Woods
This is the most popular consumer brand, and it was also rated one of the most effective on the market. Deep Woods contains 25% deet (a chemical in most bug sprays), an ingredient that has received some controversy over the years. However, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) approved the repellent and it received a “recommended,” rating from Consumer Reports.

Sawyers Fisherman’s Formula
The active ingredient in this repellent is picaridin, which is deemed safer by the CDC.Sawyers is tested and proven to repel mosquitoes for as long as seven hours. It is also the only repellent proven to repel Aedes mosquitoes (zika carriers), Culex mosquitoes (west nile carriers), and deer ticks (lyme disease carriers).

Repel Lemon Eucalyptus
This is the most natural of the recommended repellents because it is made of 30% lemon eucalyptus oil to keep bugs at bay. Be careful of the “all natural,” sprays though! Unfortunately, studies show that these repellents are less than half as effective as the more powerful chemical sprays.
