Mosquitoes continue to spread the Zika virus through North America in larger numbers. Like most viruses, Zika symptoms don’t always surface and those that have contracted the virus might not even know they have it. But before you work yourself into a frenzy, it is important to know the facts.

Zika began in Africa.
The Zika virus got its name from the area where it was first discovered — the Zika forest in Uganda. The virus stayed put in that region for over 65 years before making the move to Latin America in 2014, carried by our favorite summer pests, mosquitoes.

What is Zika?
Zika is a virus derived from the West Nile family. It’s most known for its crippling effects on the brains of newborns. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of medical precedent for treatment of this particular strand of virus, but scientists are continuing to study to find a cure. Doctors now say that there may be a connection between Zika and higher rates of autoimmune disease in adults.

Zika can be sexually transmitted.
While it is most commonly spread through mosquitoes and mice, Zika can also be sexually transmitted by men showing signs within six months of contracting the virus.

Zika symptoms are usually mild.
Eighty-percent of people infected by Zika will never see symptoms. The most common symptoms include headache, joint pain, rash, fever and other mild ailments. In rare cases, the virus can cause internal bleeding, which led to the first death on North American soil in 2016.

Mosquito repellent and control can help prevent Zika.
When you are out in the great outdoors, you want to make sure you are protected. Bring multiple bottles of your favorite bug spray and make sure to apply every hour. You should also wear protective clothing and make sure food is wrapped up and stowed away to keep the mosquitoes at bay!

Treating your property can help reduce the chance that your yard will turn into a mosquito breeding ground, limiting your risk of contracting Zika. Professional property treatment is recommended to protect you and your family this summer, and we can provide it!
