While mosquito season is coming to a close, many of us are still left with the lingering after-effects of itchy, red and swollen bite marks. In the past we’ve discussed the factors that can make people more appealing to mosquitoes, but we were still left wondering why in the world they cause us so much agony and frustration. So, we decided it was time to do some research regarding what makes bug bites itch, and here’s what we found out:

The “Bite”
First, it’s important to explain that while we refer to them as “mosquito bites,” the red, splotchy results we see are actually not caused by bites at all. Instead of biting, mosquitoes use their proboscis, a straw-like portion of their mouth, to poke around the skin in search of blood vessels that are within reach. It’s also important to point out that only female mosquitoes feed on blood.

The Saliva
Once the mosquito has located her desired blood vessel, she pierces the skin with her proboscis and releases a bit of her saliva into the wound. The saliva acts as an anticoagulant, allowing her ample time to enjoy her snack without worrying about an interruption in blood flow. Clever right?

The Reaction
When your body identifies the saliva in your system it is flagged as a foreign substance. Histamine is produced to battle the intruder, which causes swelling in the blood vessels near the bite site, explaining the red bump that’s left behind. As for the itch, the swollen blood vessels disturb nearby nerves, irritating them which creates the all-too-familiar itching sensation.

Although you now know the reasoning behind itchy bug bites, don’t expect them to be any less frustrating! To keep yourself as safe as possible from becoming a mid-day mosquito snack you’ll want to take as many precautions as possible. In fact, there’s still time to have your yard sprayed to kill off any mosquitoes left over from the summer months, which can minimize the number that return when the season picks back up again.
